BEAUTY CONFESSIONS: RAY CIVELLO Hair Guru
Ray Civello is the latest of international entrepreneurs choosing Chicago to launch their brand in the US. With a long list of celebrity clients, editorial styling credits and countless TV appearances, including Chicago’s Windy City Live, Civello is in high demand. He’s also the man behind many of Aveda’s Canadian institutions and stores as well as four Civello salons in the Toronto area. Civello is now expanding his hair empire with three Chicago salons and spas in River North, Lincoln Park and Lakeview. I had the opportunity to sit down with Civello to debunk some hair myths.
WHAT’S YOUR BEAUTY ADDICTION?
New Thickening Tonic is what I currently recommend it to all of my clients and friends. It is proven to thicken hair with just one use, making it a great addition to a blowout for any hair length.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING IN TORONTO?
Both Toronto and Chicago have a rich tapestry of cultural diversity and I have found that I love spending time in both cities! No matter where I am, I enjoy being surrounded by architecture, art, great restaurants and sports - both cities have plenty to offer.
WHAT DESIGNERS DO YOU WORSHIP?
I have lots of favorites including Yohji Yamamoto, Prada and Paul Smith.
WHAT’S YOUR BEST HAIR TIP?
Choose the right product for your hair type to work with your natural texture and learn how to apply it correctly from the roots to the ends. Make sure you never use too much, and if you need to use a lot to achieve the result, it is probably not the right product for you. Carefully read labels and take time to understand what works best for you and your hair. If you have curls, don’t shampoo your hair as often, but make sure to condition and moisturize daily.
WHAT’S THE BIGGEST HAIR MYTH?
That women look better or sexier with long hair. The majority of women believe that longer hair is more attractive, but your hair length should be determined on your lifestyle and body shape. Long hair can overpower a look and is not flattering on everyone.
WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
Diversity. My job is different every day and takes place in different places. I get to do all kinds of things from taking portraits, cutting hair, designing salons, stores and houses. I get a tremendous amount of satisfaction in helping people feel their best.
ONE THING YOU COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
Hearing my son’s morning greeting!
Hair cuts with Ray Civello are $250 at Civello Salon and Spa, located in River North, Lincoln Park and Lakeview.
