SHOPAHOLIC BECKY BRANDON’S CHRISTMAS WISH LIST

As a HUGE fan of Sophie Kinsella books, I was beyond excited when she agreed to write a piece for a magazine I was editing in 2011! I needed a cute backpage feature that incorporated both fashion and humor for the holidays. My idea was to have a Christmas wish list from the beloved fashion junkie heroin from Sophia’s Shopaholic series, Becky Brandon (née Bloomwood). Here’s the original article in full without any edits...
SHOPAHOLIC BECKY BRANDON’S CHRISTMAS WISH LIST

1. Pucci dress. It’s perfect. I’ll wear it all winter. People will call me The Girl in the Pucci dress. I’ll never have to buy anything again, ever... Ooh. Look. A Louis Vuitton vanity case.

2. Louis Vuitton vanity case. I’ve always wanted one of these. Honestly, I have, you can ask my best friend Suze. And they’re actually very practical, because you can put everything in them. (If all your stuff doesn’t fit, you can always FedEx the rest.) OK. That’s enough lusting after the Louis Vuitton, Becky. Step away from the luggage… step away… Oh my God. I don’t believe it. Is that a Louis Vuitton trunk full of Christmas decorations?

3. Louis Vuitton Christmas trunk. I have to have this. I have to. It’s amazing. And we need new Christmas decorations, so it’s not even a luxury, really. That’s what I’ll tell Luke. He’ll understand. I just wish my initials were LV. Wouldn’t that be cool? Which gives me a brilliant new idea…

4. Set of special bespoke Louis Vuitton luggage in which 'LV' has been changed to 'BB', just for me. They could do that, couldn’t they? Maybe I could start a whole new trend.

5. Manolo Blahnik Velvet & Snake d'Orsay. This shoe is so fab, I don’t know where to begin. Velvet. Snake. Leopard print. A brooch! And it'll go with everything. Luke just looked over my shoulder and said ‘How many pairs of black shoes do you own already, Becky?’ which shows how little he knows about anything. They’re not black, they’re black leopard print. And I don't have a single pair of leopard print shoes. (Except those three pairs I never wear any more, so they don't count).
SHOPAHOLIC BECKY BRANDON’S CHRISTMAS WISH LIST for Fashion Junkie.
6. Chic DVF kimono top for Christmas Day. I’ll be the perfect hostess in understated sequins. I’ll get one for Mum too, to stop her wearing that hideous ‘festive sweater’ with the fluffy musical snowmen.

7. A worldwide ‘festive sweater amnesty’. People could hand them in at their local police stations without recrimination or prosecution. It would be a service to mankind.

8. Tory Burch coin purse. I’ve been meaning to get my finances under control for a while, and the first step is definitely a gorgeous new purse.

9. I’m so in love with these Louboutins. And, Luke, if you’re reading, they’re totally different from those other shoes. The platform makes them very practical, actually. You could even wear them in the snow…

10. Perfect, white, snowy Christmas - to accessorize Louboutins.

Thank you Santa!

Love Becky xxx

FASHION CONFESSIONS: SOPHIA BUSH Actress

For 9 years she played Brook Davis, a fashion designer on CW’s popular teen show, One Tree Hill. Sophia’s now swapped her designer shoes and handbags for a gun and badge as she joins the cast of NBC's Chicago Fire spin-off, Chicago PD I met Sophia at the Coach’s launch party for their new holiday collection –which by the way is amazing (more to come in another post) –where we chatted about what else? Fashion.
One Tree Hill Sophia Bush at Coach's launch party.
WHAT’S YOUR FASHION ADDICTION?
Oh god…it’s not any one thing for me. It’s across the board. I have a purse problem. I have a shoe problem; I have a fashion problem! But I also feel like, particularly in my business, it’s by far the best addiction for a young woman to have, so I’ll take it.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
Eclectic! One of the things I love about fashion is if you feel like being incredibly polished one night and then dressing in menswear the next day and putting on a very 50s inspired dress the night after that you can. You are allowed to be whoever you feel like being in a moment. I think fashion does that for women in a way that not many things do.

WHAT’S THE MOST PRIZED POSSESSION IN YOUR CLOSET?
I honestly don’t know.

YOU FEEL MOST BEAUTIFUL WHEN?
I feel beautiful when I’m happy. When I have a particularly fulfilling day at work. Or when something incredible has happened with one of the nonprofits I work with. When I’m reminded how small I am on this planet and how big the world is it makes me feel fortunate, and that makes me feel beautiful.

WHO’S YOUR STYLE ICON?
In my peer group I think Kate Bosworth is absolutely flawless. The VP at Rachel Zoe, Mandana (Dayani), is one of the coolest girls I know, and just anytime she shows up anywhere she is jaw droppingly chic and cool. Then there’s women like Cate Blanchett and Charlize Theron who I just think are all stars at the fashion game.

WHICH DESIGNERS DO YOU WORSHIP?
Francis Costa at Calvin Klein just kills it. Then I love more whimsical edgy fashion as well. Helmut Lang…his menswear inspired pieces. Alexander Wang for his crazy sort of athletic glam visionary. And Phillip Lim is always on top of my list, and I find I’m really living in LNA they make the worlds best t-shirts. A.L.C. is hands down one of my favorite lines.

ONE THING YOU COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
My dogs, I couldn’t do it.

FASHION CONFESSIONS: MICHAEL PETRY Creative Director of the Frye Company

With The Frye Company's 150th anniversary and the opening of three new stores, it’s been an incredible year for this iconic shoe brand. Most people, including myself, know them for their classic Campus, riding or biker boot. So I was surprised to see how much more they do like loafers, sneakers, ballet flats, heels, sandals and even bags! Their collection in total consists of more than 800 items! And if you thought of their footwear as functional, durable working boots only suited for the rough outdoors you’d be wrong. These days it’s a cool fashion brand that’s still synonymies with quality and craftsmanship. I met and chatted with the creative director, Michael Petry, at their Chicago store launch.
The Frye Company's 150th anniversary and launch party in Chicago.
WHAT’S YOUR FASHION ADDICTION?
Outside of footwear? Denim.

WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE 150TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION?
The American flag is a natural starting point for us, being an American brand and Jasper Johns American flag painting.

WHO’S YOUR STYLE ICON?
Steve McQueen

‘Billy Pull On’ $298, The Frye Company

WHAT’S THE MOST PRIZED POSSESSION IN YOUR CLOSET?

I have a lot of respect for Hiroki of Visvim, Miuccia Prada, and Junya Watanabe

ONE THING YOU COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
My family

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
No two days are ever alike. The ability to work with a great group of people. I like coming to work every day.

THE LIMITED CELEBRATES GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY

Me a Model?!?

When The Limited asked me and two other bloggers, Christine of The View from 5 ft 2 and Jess of Jess and Jill to be part of their golden anniversary event I was incredibly excited. When I found out I’d be walking down the runway with ‘real’ models…
[Jessica Voice Over]: I couldn't help but wonder...is this my Carrie Bradshaw moment?

[Flashback to SATC 2001]
Carrie: I do not belong on a runway, runways are for models not writers.
Charlotte: What’s the difference between strutting down a runway and the way you strut down Fifth Avenue?
Carrie: Strut? Do I strut? Am I a strutter?
Carrie: I just… I cannot imagine walking down a runway where all the people sit there and judge me.
Charlotte: No one would judge you.
Carrie: We judge models all the time.
Miranda: But, you’re not a model you’re one of the real people.
Carrie: Exactly and I don’t want people to think that I can’t see the difference between a model and me.

[Back to 2013 reality]
After much consideration I said yes as I was incredibly honored to be asked. I just prayed I wouldn’t fall over and be fashion road kill like Carrie.
[Jessica V.O.]: The only question left to ask was “do I get to keep the clothes?”

At 5”8’ I never thought of myself as short but compared to these ‘real’ models I am!

The Limited's anniversary collection consisted of three key trends, military, equestrian and leather. Along with the models each trend had a guest blogger walking the runway in their own personal take of the look. I of course was given the Equestrian trend, [Jessica V.O.]: Was it cos of my British connections?

FASHION CONFESSIONS: ROBERT RODRIGUEZ Fashion Designer

I sat down with the talented designer, Robert Rodriguez, on the eve of his 10th year anniversary party at Neiman Marcus to ask the really important questions in life.
FASHION CONFESSIONS with fashion designer ROBERT RODRIGUEZ
WHAT’S YOUR FASHION ADDICTION?
Shoes!!! I love shoes I actually have a love affair with shoes. I will buy shoes before I buy anything else. I have roughly over 50-60 pairs in my closet. I can wear just a simple pair of jeans and a white T-shirt everyday but I have to wear a fabulous pair of shoes. And that’s me.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU MADE TO THE BRAND FOR YOUR 10TH YEAR ANNIVERSARY?
After 10 years we wanted to give it a face-lift. We’ve revamped the collection, taken it into a fresh direction. We’ve also launched a new logo and built a new showroom in NY –it looks like a spaceship very futuristic and very cool. We’re all just so excited about it.

Autumn/Winter ’13 Collection

WHO’S THE ROBERT RODRIGUEZ GIRL?
She’s a lot of things. You know she’s a downtown girl and uptown girl, she’s strong, she’s confident and fashion forward. Loves fashion and a hip girl who loves fashion.

YOU HAVE DRESSED SO MANY STYLISH WOMEN INCLUDING AGNELINA JOLIE, SCARLETT JOHANSSON, NICOLE KIDMAN WHO’S BEEN YOUR FAV TO DRESS?
I love all of them but Eva Longoria stands out for me. I did a black dress for her and she was really sexy in it.
Eva Longoria in a ROBERT RODRIGUEZ dress
WHAT’S THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS SEASON’S COLLECTION?
Fall/winter collection was inspired by glam punk. I wanted to reference the late 70s and early 80s but show how a girl would wear it today. So I didn’t want it to be literal and I didn’t want it to be obvious. I played around a lot with Debbie Harry’s look. That was my muse.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT LIVING IN LA?
LA is very inspiring for me as a New Yorker. The lovely weather, beautiful nature and architecture are all very inspiring. There is also a very eclectic feel and lots of amazing street fashion, which I love.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
I’m very simple, t-shirt, pair of jeans, great shoes and a watch –no other jewelry. It’s understated elegance!

WHAT’S THE MOST PRIZED POSSESSION IN YOUR CLOSET?
A deep red vintage leather motorcycle jacket that I won’t ever give up. I normally don’t wear color so I treasure this piece and I know I won’t ever find something like this again.

HOW ARE YOU PLANNING ON CELEBRATING YOUR 10th YEAR ANNIVERSARY?
We’re party hopping! We had a big launch party in Toronto two weeks ago. Tonight we’re celebrating with Neiman Marcus as part of their new store renovation and launch of the CUSP boutique, which is really cool. Then Off to LA for fashion week and then to South Beach Miami for an event at Art Basel.
