FASHIONABLE DISCOVERIES: Bentley Hair and Beauty Salon
All my life I have struggled with frizzy hair, it’s something that has always been difficult to control even after trying countless assortments of anti-frizzing products. So I was excited when the owner of Bentley Hair and Beauty Salon, Jennifer Long Riordan,
invited me to try a hair-smoothing treatment called the
Brazilian Blowout.
The brilliance behind this blowout is that it is a fully customizable depending on your needs. Whether you wear your hair straight or curly, there are varying degrees of bespoke finishes, but the treatment will smooth, fight the frizz and increase manageability.
First, your hair is washed with a clarifying shampoo making sure it’s completely removed of any excess oil or dirt, and the cuticles are fully opened. Next, the solution is brushed onto the damp hair. Your hair is then blow-dried, and flat ironed before the treatment is rinsed out –which I know sounds counterintuitive. A hair bonding spray is applied before your hair is blow-dried once again. And that is it, you are ready to go.
Depending on the length of your locks the whole process is around two hours and lasts 12 weeks. To maximum the results you'll need to up your product game. Using a sulfate-free and sodium chloride-free shampoo and conditioner will help extend the results of the treatment.
Located in the Gold Coast, Bentley is not your typical salon, for starters, the hand-selected team is made up entirely of senior stylists to ensure each customer the best quality of service. Also, Jennifer and her two lead stylists, Danielle Reilly and Stephen Donovan, are from Europe, which is always head of the US in both style and technique. And lastly, the salon is only one of five in Chicago to carry the exclusive hair care brand, Shu Uemura Art of Hair, a range routinely praised in magazines such as Allure, Vogue, and Elle.

BEAUTY CONFESSIONS: Christina Mace-Turner, CEO of True Botanicals
As a leader within some of the most innovative companies in the world, first Apple and then Flipboard, Christina has a career-long habit of leveraging technology to transform consumer experiences. After becoming a serious user of True Botanicals and fan of their philosophy, the idea of giving the beauty industry a complete tech make-over took shape — and she knew this was the brand to do it. Christina soon joined the team to take their direct sales model to the next level, delivering unprecedented transparency, greater value, and superior results to their growing clientele, while also highlighting and rewarding the sustainable farmers who provide the ingredients for True Botanicals products. Knowing that she is creating meaningful change within an industry that was so desperately in need of it makes this latest chapter in her career incredibly rewarding.
WHAT’S YOUR BEAUTY ADDICTION?
I go crazy if I am separated from our Renew Mist for more than a day. I'm obsessed with the smell - so relaxing - and the way it makes my skin feel. I have travel sized versions of it in every bag and I keep a bottle of it on my desk for quick pick me ups. When my teenage kids start to get really irritated with me, I spray it on their faces to calm them down!
WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
I get to go to work every day with people I adore and admire, and focus on a mission that means so much to each of us. We are dedicated to empowering our customers and changing the beauty industry for the better; while it's hard work, it's incredibly gratifying.
FAVORITE VACATION DESTINATION?
Hydra, Greece. I've been going there since I was a child, and it hasn't changed a bit. Donkey's, clear water and the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
My daughters. I learn so much from them!
LAST FILM YOU WATCHED?
"At the Fork" which is a documentary about meat production in the United States. Doesn't sound very entertaining, but it actually is so interesting!
YOUR CELEBRITY CRUSH GROWING UP?
Ricky Schroder was my 12 year old celebrity crush. I loved "Silver Spoons" and went with a group of friends to the mall to stand on line for hours to get his autograph. When I finally got to the front of the line, I asked for a kiss, of course.
CURRENTLY OBSESSED WITH?
Inez & Vinoodh and how they manage to turn every portrait they take into a work of art.
SUM YOURSELF UP IN THREE WORDS...
Driven. Excited. Alive.
WHAT'S THE ONE THING IN YOUR MAKE-UP BAG YOU COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT?
True Botanicals eye & lip balm.
DRINK OF CHOICE?
Dirty Tito's martini. It's my go to.
LAST TIME YOU WERE STARSTRUCK?
A dinner with Tom Wolfe years ago. I only really get starstruck with great authors.
LAST TIME YOU WERE LATE?
Ummm, is that a rhetorical question?
True Botanicals is available at truebotanicals.com and Barneys New York.

BEAUTY CONFESSIONS: Barry Beck, co-founder of Bluemercury
If you feel shopping for beauty products at a department store too pressurized and impersonal, then you need to check out Bluemercury. Started in 1999 by husband and wife entrepreneurs Barry and Marla Beck. Their concept was to create a neighborhood beauty and spa boutique that offered varied or exclusive products in a more relaxed setting. With over 130 stores nationwide the luxury retailer has been wildly successful, they’ve just opened their 7th Chicago store and plan to open seven more throughout the city. I spoke to Barry to find out his beauty confessions.
WHAT IS YOUR BEAUTY ADDICTION? I love Molton Brown; I use their body wash every single day, it's my favorite product, it’s like a treatment in the morning, and it makes me feel better. People always think that I use ‘Black Peppercorn’ because it’s more masculine, but the truth is I use ‘Pink Pepperpod’. WHAT’S YOUR FAV THING ABOUT LIVING IN DC?
It is a gateway city. When you look at America you got these gateway cities; you got NY, DC, Chicago and LA. So it’s an incredible gateway city, it’s still manageable, and you're able to get around. And it still has that wonderful suburban feel to it even though it’s growing so fast. It’s an incredible city, and I love it. And I love Georgetown, where we are based, it’s so vibrant and exciting with incredible shops and restaurants, and I love being there.
WHICH CITY SPENDS THE MOST ON BEAUTY PRODUCTS?
Definitely, New York City but Number 2 is Chicago and number 3 is LA. Chicago is in front of LA!
LAST FILM YOU WATCHED?
Miss Sloane, with Jessica Chastain, great movie and you know what I loved about it the most? Her outfits. Every woman should go out right now and watch that movie just to see what she wore. The outfits were so chic, so stylish so wonderful. It might be hard to pull some of them off like the patent leather, but she was so elegant, so timeless.
WHO WAS YOUR CELEBRITY CRUSH GROWING UP?
Heather Locklear … and my guy crush is Leonardo DiCaprio, I love him. He’s my favorite actor in the world; he’s such a movie star. I was in a room with him once, in California we were at a party together. And he walked into the room, and you can just tell he was a true Hollywood star, love him…elegant, refined and he is a Bluemercury customer.
FAVORITE PRODUCT IN YOUR STORE?
My favorite number one product is the Power Glow Peel. I love it, especially for guys... it’s one minute, change your life, make you look better, swipe to the right, and it’s no fuss!
WHAT’S YOUR CHOICE OF DRINK?
Macallan 18, I’m a scotch guy.
FAVORITE BOOK?
The Snowball about Warren Buffett, you know why? It teaches me lessons on business and life.
Bluemercury's new North River store, 356 North Clarke Street, is now open.

FASHIONABLE DISCOVERIES: Bespoke Apothecary Preparations
The trend of bespoke of beauty products and services continues. Back in August for the Chicago Tribune, I tried out two new customized services, one for make-up, (Lancôme) and the other for hair (Kerastase), which you can read about here.
Now we can add skincare to the list with Kiehl’s. Originally an Apothecary when it first opened in 1851, customers would go to Kiehl’s for your prescription medicine as well as customized herbal and natural skin and hair remedies. Kiehl’s has decided to go back to its roots, with a personalized skincare service called Apothecary Preparations.
I was fortunate enough to be invited along to try out their new service.
Step 1: Diagnosis
At your one-on-one consultation with a Kiehl's customer representative, aka KCR, your skin will be diagnosed. The surface oil on your face is measured to help identify your skin type (normal, oily, combo or dry). I'm a combo, as I'm oily on my T-zones and normal to dry elsewhere.
Then a dehydration analyzer will be used to measure the water in your skin, 1 being the lowest and 100 the highest. I was told you don't want anything less than 50, I, unfortunately, got a disappointing 34. What does that mean? My skin is dehydrated, and I need to start drinking lots more water.
Step 2: Selection
Next, you discuss with your KCR a series of skin-related issues, like texture, dullness, redness, wrinkles and pore size and identify which two are your main concerns. This determines the two skin boosters that will be mixed in with your base concentrate, to create your individual serum. I went with Brightening and Pore Minimizing.
Step 3: Personalization
You leave with a box and bottle with your name plus details of your personal formula and directions for use.
Your personalized serum is recorded in the system for future reorders.
Apothecary Preparations is currently available at 21 of their stores and retails for $95. Go to kiehls.com to find your nearest location.

How The New DUO Body Cleanser Will Make Travelling Easier
Along with being a fashion and beauty junkie, I am also addicted to traveling. There is nothing more thrilling than visiting new countries, seeing different cultures, experiencing different smells and foods. However, one aspect of travel that I hate is carrying luggage, especially heavy luggage. Being laden down with bags slows me down and makes travel so much more difficult and tiring.
It's something I’m constantly battling, and as someone who always wants to look their best, this can often equate to lots of luggage. Over the years I’ve worked really hard to build a capsule wardrobe -a well edited collection of clothes that are interchangeable to create a various number of looks. Gone are the days when you pack a different shoe or bag for each outfit. You want pieces that will work with several looks.
The other area where I try to reduce the weight is with my toiletries. I want the best travel-ready beauty products that I can toss straight into my carry-on because looking fabulous is always on my itinerary.
I like to take products that have multi-uses. For example, a pencil that can be used for both my eyebrows and eyeliner or a face oil that doubles as a split end treatment or a cleanser that is also a make-up remover. This way, I'm not sacrificing my beauty routine.
I’ve recently come across a new product that will now be an essential part of my curated beauty kit. Olay has introduced a 2 in 1 body cleanser (DUO Body Cleanser, $9.99) which, means I no longer have to pack a shower gel and body puff, hurrah! Instead, I just add water to activate the lather. One side is textured to allow you to exfoliate and the other side is smooth to condition the skin.
I've always found that traditional body puffs never really removed any dead skin, yet I continued to use it because there wasn't a better option until now. So for me, this is a game changer.
Just hang to dry between uses and replace when lather fades, usually after about 30 uses. You can also tell as the inner core of soap will slowly shrink down after each wash.
DUO comes in 3 different scents Old Spice Pure Sport, Ivory Refreshing Clean and my personal fav Olay Soothing Orchid and Black Currant. It's a great blend of floral with fruit to create a refreshing trace.
For more info go to CleansingDUOs.com
DUO Body Cleansers, $9.99, are available at drugstores, mass retailers and CleansingDUOs.com
Big thank you to P&G for sponsoring this post!

NEW WORK: Chicago Tribune
CHICAGO TRIBUNE,
High-tech Beauty Solutions for the Modern Girl
With technology entering every aspect of our lives, as you might expect, it's now infiltrating the beauty industry. This year sees two major brands using advanced technology to give its customers a more specialized experience and products.
I decided to test them both out to see if they were all hype or actually useful.
After becoming a Lancôme brand ambassador in 2014, Lupita Nyong'o had trouble finding a foundation color from the company's 35 shades that would match her skin. That's when Lancôme realized this was a problem not only for Nyong'o but for thousands of other women.
With that in mind, Lancôme created Le Teint Particulier Custom Made Makeup. Developed using state-of-the-art digital technology, women can now create a foundation color made specifically for their skin tone.
My olive skin isn't always the easiest to match, so I'd thought I give it a go. The process starts with a one-on-one consultation. A beauty adviser uses a small color scanner, no bigger than a smartphone, to capture your skin color in three photos, and these are analyzed against a database of 20,000 shades.
You also choose type of coverage (sheer, medium or full), the finish and whether you want an additional moisturizer added to the formula. Now for the cool bit, right at the counter, you get to watch your foundation being made in a machine that uses eight peristaltic heart pumps for color accuracy and airtight dispensing. Then the formula is shaken at high speed for thorough blending.
You get to take away your tailor-made foundation in a refillable bottle personalized with your name and a complexion ID. This number represents your unique color, allowing you to re-order the foundation anytime.
When I first applied the foundation, it didn't seem like the perfect shade, but once blended, it was a good match. What I liked about the service is that everything can be adjusted to your needs at no extra cost. As the consultation is free, I can get re-scanned in the winter when my skin is paler. I can even add more moisturizer when my skin tends to be drier.
The custom-made makeup is $80 for 1 ounce and is available at select Nordstrom stores. To find the nearest location, visit http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/lancome-le-teint-particulier.
Personalized in-salon hair treatments aren't new for Kerastase, but the company has upped the ante this year by adding a high-tech hair and scalp profiler camera to the process.
The camera is a smartphone that uses a high-power magnification lens specially designed for Kerastase. The process allows the stylist to zoom into the hair fiber at 600 times magnification and analyze how oily your scalp is, your hair density, dryness and hair loss. You are able to view the hair fiber and scalp images on an iPad as the stylist is taking the pictures.
Finding out details like this was incredibly eye-opening as it helped me understand what products I should be using to achieve optimal results.
Once the diagnosis is complete, it's time for the fun part, your bespoke beauty treatment. The treatment consists of two components.
The first is called the Concentre, which addresses your primary hair concern: nourishment and softness, color radiance, reconstruction or density. The second component, known as the Booster, tackles a secondary hair issue: nourishment, radiance, reconstruction, density or anti-frizziness.
After the analysis, the treatment gets blended by the stylist and then applied to your freshly washed hair. Like a conditioner, the treatment is left on for five minutes before it's rinsed out.
After the treatment, my hair was definitely less frizzy and softer, but like all treatments, the results, unfortunately, aren't permanent. But it's a great temporary solution to perk up your hair for a special event. For me, getting a better understanding of my hair was the most valuable part of the process.
Prices start at $30 at over 75 locations nationwide. Visit www.kerastase-usa.com to find a salon near you.

But it's a great temporary solution to perk up your hair for a special event. For me, getting a better understanding of my hair was the most valuable part of the process.

5 reasons to check out the new flagship Sephora on MI Ave
1. The new Michigan Avenue location is the fourth store in North America to be a T.I.P. (teach, inspire, play) Workshop concept store geared toward beauty education.
2. It is also the first in the midwest to get the Fragrance Studio Experience, featuring Fragrance IQ. This walks you through the 18 different scent categories (floral, citrus, spicy, etc.) but more excitingly the machine emits a jet of scented air, known as Instascent, to let you smell the different scent families. It’s the raw note you are smelling to help you discover what types of scents you like before trying on individual fragrances. It then suggests different types of fragrances that you might like based on the results.
3. 12 Beauty T.I.P. Workshop stations, each has iPad, USB port and wifi along with a mirror and makeup. Here you can take group beauty classes with educated facilitators or virtual tutorials on the iPad.
4. One of the first Skincare Studios at Sephora to have a sink, I know that doesn’t sound very new or exciting however lots of make-up stores or counters don’t have running water. This will allow customers to have mini facials in stores something not previously available. Also with new the adjustable lighting, it allows the customers to have better skin analysis. There is a Skincare IQ diagnostic, a touchscreen service, helping customers to select the best products based on their skin concerns.
5. With over 10,040-square-foot and 13,000 products including iconic, cult and emerging brands, it’s the largest store in the midwest.

How Adam Bogucki transformed me into a blonde, well sorta
Finding a good colorist is so much harder than finding a good hair stylist -ask any hair obsessed girl. I’ve always struggled, and I’ve had some disastrous experiences including one when I first moved to Chicago. It was so bad I had to go back to London to my old colorist to get it fixed, luckily I already had a trip booked for later that week.
So I’m always scared to try new people but was intrigued when I was invited to Adam Bogucki's new salon Lumination. I’ve heard great things about him and it was time for a color change.
In the past, I've had an ombré look but felt it’s been done to death; I was after a newer and fresher concept. We looked at lots of photos of different hair colors and we discussed what could work including some of the current big hair trends like bronde and Tortoiseshell Hair. What I loved about Adam was his knowledge of upcoming color trends.
One look in particular that I loved was Sandra Bullock's hair in the film Our Brand is Crisis. She had a blonde top layer (which was actually a wig), but the underneath was still dark. We decided to do a version of this as I wasn't so sure I could go that blonde -I know a total wuss.
Another big concern I had was making sure my hair didn’t turn orange as it so often does. Instead of doing balayage, the most popular color technique of painting the highlights, he went old school with foils. Why? Well as Adam explained, "you get a better lift and balayage on dark hair usually turns brassy." For me, that was massively important.
He was TOTALLY right, it’s one of the first times my hair didn’t look orange (and required an additional toner), what a sigh of relief. I LOVED the color; for me, it’s the closest I’ve ever been to blonde. And what this showed me is that blonde does work with my coloring, and I think next time I'll be braver, who knows I might become a real blonde!

BEAUTY CONFESSIONS: Sarah Potempa
Sarah Potempa, a celebrity hair stylist known for creating gorgeous waves has worked with many Hollywood stars including Resse Wetherspoon, Emily Blunt and Halie Seinfeld as well as countless magazine covers and ad campaigns. However, her passion is teaching women how to achieve stunning red carpet hair themselves.
In an effort to make one of the most popular and requested looks, the beachy wave, easier to recreate she invented the first rotating curling iron, the Beachwaver (and you can read my review here.) I sat down with Potempa to talk about to talk about some of her favorite things.
